Our Story – Grass Roots & Custom Creations ~ How It All Began

September 11, 2020

Our journey began in the year 2000 as Kevin, my husband and the owner of Custom Creations Landscaping & Lawn, started mowing lawns as a side business in high school to support himself through college (hint, hint…notice the “grass roots”). Through the years,  Kevin realized his interest was rapidly growing to include landscape design and construction, as well as plants and turf health. He was able to use his creativity, skills, and the knowledge he had gained through the years to complete numerous projects, both small and large scale.

In 2001 Kevin and I met, and we married in 2003.  Every summer I would help Kevin with landscaping projects, and as I worked alongside him my passion for flowers, plants and helping others bloomed.  Kevin’s desire to use his creativity and expertise to help homeowners get the highest quality of work completed fueled a second dream for us both – to open a garden & landscaping supply store.  My ideas, inspiration, and determination teamed up with Kevin’s skills, knowledge, and creativity brought our dream to life when Grass Roots Garden Center & Gifts opened in March of 2018.

Looking back, it is crazy to think how far we have come; the changes and additions we have made, and all that we have learned in the past 2 ½ years. I truly believe we have helped fill a need that people within our community had: to be able to get high-quality professional materials so that they can do projects at home, but also to have someone to guide them through the process. I have always enjoyed encouraging, teaching, and helping others, and the store has helped to make this even more possible.  I cherish the relationships we have developed with so many customers: helping them with their landscaping projects, picking out the perfect gift for a friend, geeking out about plants or simply having a therapy chat session (because we all know I love to talk)!

Thank you for continuing to support us through these years! We will continue to work hard, have fun, and help make the world a prettier and better place!

Watering Tips

  • Our watering advice is based on plants living in a 72 degree house. Porch life or humidity could have an impact on its watering needs.
  • Always use tepid water for watering your houseplants.
  • Broadleaf plants need less water in fall and winter, but you should never allow the soil to completely dry out.
